Abstract

Reported clinical benefits of bronchial thermoplasty (BT) in 16 subjects with asthma (reduced airway hyperresponsiveness, improved peak flow, increased symptom-free days) motivated an assessment of quality of life changes and patient satisfaction with the procedure. A 13-item questionnaire was administered 2 months after the last patient completed the 12-month follow-up (i.e. 14–36 months post-BT). Patients reported an increased ability to carry out activities (n = 14), increased tolerance to allergens (n = 13) and increased tolerance for physical exertion (n = 14). All patients indicated that they would ‘probably’/’definitely’ undergo the procedure again and would recommend it. These results suggest that BT may have a positive impact on longterm quality of life in asthma patients.
